The next day, Ruth had a hard time of it. All the rest of the household was acting like Christmas had come early, with bustling about in a great good humor, shouts, teasing, laughing, joking and even a snatch of song or two.
Only Ruth had trouble walking or moving around. Only Ruth sat tenderly and stood up gingerly.
Kate bounced like the other ladies, happy to have so much company and be together with her man once more.
Ruth had hoped that perhaps Kate might have gotten some of the same treatment she got last night. She considered that the other woman richly deserved it for provoking the whole incident but apparently Stink was in such a genial mood that he was willing to let such rudeness slip by. That alone made Ruthâs pain more unbearable and she longed to get back at Kate, but how?
All day, she looked for an opportunity, but found nothing. Simon kept her busy with chores and preparations for the holiday and the move to their own house. Stink said it would be done in a few days, if ever he could get the chance to go up there and finish it. Ruth wished he would go, and rued the fact that Simon was clever enough not to dare to leave Ruth alone with Kate. Thatâs what she got for having an intelligent husband.
So she worked and she waited all day, getting more and more irritable, but managing to keep herself in check. She felt some small satisfaction in not having given Simon any excuse to punish her again as she climbed the stairs to bed that night, tired and alone. Alone? Why did that bother her, she wondered. Was it because that nasty chit Kate made such a show of fawning over her besotted husband? Did Kate think she was making anyone jealous with her lovey-dovey antics? Stink was eating it up, for sure, but the only person who looked even slightly jealous was Maisy.
And why did her heart jump when she heard the knock at her door? She couldnât admit to herself that she was wishing that Simon might have done more than nod at her casually to let know that he heard her tell him good night. The thought just made her feel surlier as she went to open the door to admit him.
She peered out at him. âWhat do you want?â
âLet me in, please. We have some business to attend to before you go to bed,â Simon told her.
âI donât know what you could mean,â she haughtily replied, still leaning on the door.
He shoved gently against the door, moving her without effort. When she slid into the leg of the bed to brace herself, he simply shoved the bed over, too.
âLet me in and Iâll tell you,â he answered.
âI donât see as I have any choice.â
âYou donât need a choice, Ruth. Youâve had too many choices in your life and you havenât made good ones. Itâs time your life got real simple, right down to right and wrong, yes and no.
